Whoever came up with that must've been sadistic.

Wow-you're right. I didn't believe you at first, but you were right. Whoever came up with the term has (or had) a sick sense of humour.

Yet a better analysis would find that Hippo is in this word. Why? The world may never know.

I have hurt that before. It just shows that the person who names phobas is ironic or getting bored/annoyed. Everything has a phobia, and a support group.
